12/3/08 08:48 am - Its a bad thing when you start yelling at the radio before 7 am

This moning I was listening to the CBC and they were talking about how the public doesn't want this deal with the evil separatists. Then the CBC played a message form a listener who called in the thing that had me fuming is I have heard this same listeners complaint 3 times(the exact same message), now I only listen to the radio first thing in the morning, so I wonder how many time this little sound bite has been played over the past two days because if people aren't paying attention it sounds like a lot of people are calling about this.

It also pisses me off to know end hearing Harper talk about how its so wrong to make a deal with the Bloc, does he not remember this letter from 4 years ago that was signed by him:

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson,
C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D.
Governor General
Rideau Hall
1 Sussex Drive
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A1

Excellency,

As leaders of the opposition parties, we are well aware that, given the Liberal minority government, you could be asked by the Prime Minister to dissolve the 38th Parliament at any time should the House of Commons fail to support some part of the government's program.

We respectfully point out that the opposition parties, who together constitute a majority in the House, have been in close consultation. We believe that, should a request for dissolution arise this should give you cause, as constitutional practice has determined, to consult the opposition leaders and consider all of your options before exercising your constitutional authority.

Your attention to this matter is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
Leader of the Opposition
Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada

Gilles Duceppe, M.P.
Leader of the Bloc Quebecois

Jack Layton, M.P.
Leader of the New Democratic Party

10/29/08 04:22 pm - 51 Days and couting

Until I leave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Today I got an email that my application for a working holiday maker visa has been approved. Terry was talking to the ITF guy(from London) and they have a bunch of people who will be moving up within the union so there will be several entry level positions opening up soon, which would be fantastic(a union job, most likely better hours and pay). If the ITF thing doesn't work out I'm sure I'll find somthing.

I can't believe I'll be leaving so soon.

I'll be going through my room and probably do a bit of a garrage sale of books and some cloths/costumes some time late november, will have more details soon.

Thats all the wit and info I can come up with right now.

9/30/08 07:36 pm - How do we look at the right to vote(stolen from an email from Bonnie)

(I know this is an American story but the idea behind it apply's to everyone in Canada as we'll. Canadian women only got the right to vote around 1918ish and lots of people take it for granted)
THIS IS MOVING. HOW QUICKLY WE FORGET.....IF ....WE EVER KNEW......

WHY WOMEN SHOULD VOTE

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers;

they lived only 90 years ago.

Remember, it was not until 1920

that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

(Dora Lewis)
They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her
head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate,
Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack.
Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging,
beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917,
when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his
guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because
they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right
to vote.

For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their
food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed
nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking
for the vote.

(Lucy Burns)
And by the end of the night, they were barely alive.
Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing
went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of
'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'
They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above
her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping
for air.

(Alice Paul)
When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike,

they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into

her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks
until word was smuggled out to the press.
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/suffrage/nwp/prisoners.pdf

So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because-
-why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work?
Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO's new
movie 'Iron Jawed Angels.' It is a graphic depiction of the battle
these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling
booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the
actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote.
Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege.
Sometimes it was inconvenient.

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women's history,
saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk
about it, she looked angry. She was--with herself. 'One thought
kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,' she said.
'What would those women think of the way I use, or don't use,
my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just
younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.' The
right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her 'all over again.'

HBO released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history,
social studies and government teachers would include the movie in
their curriculum I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere
else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing,
but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think
a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist

to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized.

And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave.

That didn't make her crazy.

The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know.

We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so
hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote NDP, Liberal, Green,

or Conservative, or independent party - remember to vote.

Lets Annoy the hell out of the Harper and Finley!!

ON SEPTEMBER 17: Call Stephen Harper and Diane Finley

STOP THE DEPORTATION OF JEREMY HINZMAN AND HIS FAMILY

IN 8 DAYS, US Iraq war resister Jeremy Hinzman, his wife Nga Nguyen and their two children face deportation from Canada to the United States. If deported, Jeremy faces a court-martial and imprisonment for his refusal to participate in the illegal and immoral Iraq war.

On July 15th, another US war resister – Robin Long – was deported by the Harper government to the US where he was sentenced to 15 months in jail. He also received a dishonourable discharge, the equivalent of a felony conviction.

Canadians have repeatedly expressed their support for Iraq war resisters. On June 3rd, a motion was adopted in the House of Commons in favour of allowing resisters to stay in Canada, and calling on the federal government to cease deportation proceedings. A recent poll by Angus Reid found that two-thirds of Canadians support letting US war resisters stay.

URGENT ACTION REQUEST:
On Wednesday September 17, call Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Minister of Immigration Diane Finley to demand:

• that they stop the deportation of Jeremy Hinzman and his family;
• that they respect the democratic will of Parliament and implement the War Resisters motion.

Stephen Harper:

Constituency office: 1-403-253-8203

Diane Finley:

8/18/08 09:41 am - Fuck I still feel like a zombie

And I didn't even go to the Zombie Walk this weekend....

Saturday night I went over to Herminia's place. We watched movies until 4 am so I decided to just crash at her place. At 6:30 in the morning I was woken up by a loud anoying alarm like thingy. It was the fire alarm, if there had been some sort of explosive fire we would have been gonners. It took us 10 minnutes to get out the door and another 5 before Herminia was ready because she had to get underwear on(she had a knee length skirt on and was trying to put it on while standing). Then we finnally made it outside and waited for the all clear to go back in. After a couple of minnutes I decided to just head home.

Needless to say I didn't do much Sunday. I watched Pans Labarinth and was in bed by 5:30. My mom phoned at 8ish, I talked to her and may have hung up(hopefully the fact I was asleap got through). I know she called because of my cell phone.

Hopefully today goes quickley.

6/8/08 07:52 pm - Best Sushi Place I've been to in Ages

I Sushi on Arubutus and Broadway. Has great Sashimi, the best Tuna Tataki and really interesting house rolls(we had the Brazilian samba which was California, spicy tuna, salmon, tempura, green onion and sesame).

They are at 2568 Arbutus and do delivery within 5 k, is that close enough to Hermis's?

3/1/08 01:54 pm - Government Censorship that would not help the canadian television/film insutry

This was all grabbed from a face book group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9036150977

Canada's Tory government is using clauses hidden away in Bill C10, an omnibus piece of legislation tweaking the Income Tax Act, to set itself up as the arbiter of which films and TV programs made in Canada are offensive, or not in the public interest. If C10 passes, the Heritage Minister will develop guidelines to deny tax credits (a key part of film and TV financing in Canada) to shows that step over the line--and it's anyone's guess how the Tories will define 'decency', 'obscenity', or 'contrary to public policy'.

The Tories' evangelical base is celebrating the new legislation as a victory: the Globe and Mail reports that "Charles McVety, president of the Canada Family Action Coalition, said his lobbying efforts included discussions with Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day and Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, and 'numerous' meetings with officials in the Prime Minister's Office. 'We're thankful that someone's finally listening,' he said yesterday. 'It's fitting with conservative values, and I think that's why Canadians voted for a Conservative government.' 'There are a number of Conservative backbench members that do a lot of this work behind the scenes,' he said."

Right.

What's more, most films and TV programs apply for tax credits late in the game, after scripts have been written and principal photography completed. They use the predictability of tax credits to apply for federal subsidies, loans, and Telefilm Canada grants. With the proposed new guidelines, films and TV programs with even a whiff of controversy will become risky for funders, and artists will be under strong pressure to self-censor.

Please join this group, encourage people you know to join, and WRITE LETTERS to Senators, MPs, party leaders, the Minister of Heritage, and others. You'll find contact info and sample letters below.

Bill C10 is currently in Third Reading, which is to say that there's little time to mobilize on this. (Though see the Discussion Board below for updates.) Please do what you can.

Bill to Protect Fetuses Would Hurt Pregnant Women

OTTAWA — A private member’s bill that would give a fetus legal rights would not only endanger abortion rights, but would hurt pregnant women trying to have a baby, according to the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, a national pro-choice group.

Bill C-484, “The Unborn Victims of Violence Act,” would allow charges to be laid in the death of a fetus if the pregnant woman is a victim of a crime. It was introduced in Parliament on Wednesday by Conservative MP Ken Epp, who is anti-abortion.

“The intent of this law is to give rights to fetuses so that abortion can be re-criminalized,” said Joyce Arthur, Coordinator of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC). She noted that anti-abortion groups are the ones promoting this law. “They’re desperate to find a way to reverse abortion rights, and it’s very unfortunate that they’re exploiting the tragic murders of pregnant women to do so.”

But Arthur says an “Unborn Victims of Violence Act” would endanger the rights of all pregnant women, including those trying to have a baby. Thirty-seven American states have so-called “Fetal Homicide” laws, which she says have ended up being used mostly against pregnant women themselves, not third parties who assault pregnant women. “Dozens of pregnant women in the U.S. have been arrested, prosecuted, and jailed for behaviour perceived to harm their fetuses,” said Arthur. “Arrests of pregnant women have even occurred in cases where the law targets only third parties and exempts pregnant women from prosecution.” This occurs because such laws create a confusing legal contradiction between “fetal rights” and the rights of pregnant women.

“This kind of law has no rational basis,” said Catherine Megill, another ARCC spokesperson. “It is designed to satisfy emotional needs, and the wish for punishment and vengeance. While we deeply sympathize with the victims’ families, there’s just no evidence that an Unborn Victims of Violence Act will have any beneficial or deterrent effect. In fact, it would do nothing to prevent domestic abuse or protect pregnant women.”

What is really needed, says Megill, are more comprehensive measures to prevent domestic violence. “Resources and supports to protect pregnant women from domestic violence would actually do much more to help them and their fetuses,” said Megill. “This would also help women who have recently given birth and women who have abortions against their partner’s wishes. These women are at increased risk of domestic violence too, and an Unborn Victims of Violence Act would completely fail them.”

(For more information on the harms of a “fetal homicide” law, please see our Position Paper at: www.arcc-cdac.ca/postionpapers/57-Fetal-Homicide-Law.pdf).

10/19/07 06:34 pm - Intelligence

I don't know if any of you people have ever watched this show, but its looking like its gonna go the way of all good TV(be canceled after its second season). I'm putting this out there so people can send this to CBC to try and get it a third season, preferably not with the same time as Heros. It is seriously one of the best shows on TV right now, yes I think its better than Heros, if you liked Sopranos you will like this show. Its a fantastic Crime Drama with impeccable writing, acting, directing and one of the sexiest soundtracks ever.

This is copied from the Intelligence Facebook and was written by Alana Husband.
"Alright people, Intelligence needs your help... as you may (or may not) know, the CBC has done a woefully pathetic job of promoting/supporting the show...without the promos and ads we can't get viewers and no viewers means no third season... I have been ranting and raving...but now I am taking action, and I am calling you all to arms. Don't let the CBC get away their attempt to bury one the most critically acclaimed shows it has ever had. Don't let them replace Canadian programming with more American shows. Let's keep our National Broadcaster a) national and b) Canadian. Please take a moment to read the letter I have written and if you want, simply copy, past and send it to the addresses below:

Yeah, I am doing this to keep my job, but I also believe that the future of Canadian Television needs its viewers to speak up. Believe me, I am used to being apathetic so for me to sit down and write a letter is well, unheard of. Seriously, I won't even complain about burnt food at a restaurant. But I digress...I am going to be sending this letter to everyone I know, and I will be sending it to the CBC EVERY MONDAY, right after Intelligence airs. I hope you will find the time to send it out at least once as well.

~Alana Husband

I am writing in regard to the way CBC has essentially buried one of it’s most acclaimed programs “Intelligence”. I have yet to see a single ad or promo heralding the return of the show that has garnered 11 Gemini nominations and has been sold to over 140 countries around the world. Many of the hard won fans from the first season didn’t even know it was returning. Not only that, the CBC has put the show up against “Heroes” and “Dancing with the Stars,” as if it wasn’t hard enough for a Canadian show to pull viewers.
I also noticed that in the in the online CBC Fall Schedule, 20 pages long, The Tudors has the first 2 pages all to its self followed by Little Mosque on the Prairie, Heartland & No Opportunity Wasted which each get a page. Intelligence can be found on the SECOND TO LAST PAGE after every single other show has been listed & relegated to only half a page next to Triple Sensation, a show that isn’t even the same genre. As if the show was an afterthought hardly worth mentioning.
It disheartens me that our own NATIONAL broadcasting system seems to care so little for one of the few programs that not only embodies the Canadian experience on the west coast but also reflects Canada as a whole by letting people in on a side of Canada that is rarely seen. Indeed, how many people had even heard of CSIS? Or knew what they did? I’d be willing to bet too few.

I truly hope that the CBC will continue to bring quality Canadian programming into the homes of Canadians and to support all the Canadian writers, directors, actors, producers and crews who strive so hard to make a living doing what they love. It is only with the nurturing of our Film and Television Industry can we hope develop an industry that can compete with the other markets around the world. But not if you take a great show and punish it for being successful. You may think all Canadians want to watch American programming…but give them a fair choice. Help the good shows, invest in them & invest in your country, put good shows in good time slots. Be the foundation our industry can build on.

Sincerely,

Alana Husband

CBC's Intelligence takes you on a wild ride

By JOHN DOYLE

Monday, October 1, 2007 – Page R3

Intelligence (CBC, 9 p.m.) is certainly sexy, but not in any crass fashion. And in truth it has received ludicrously little promotion from CBC.The promotional emphasis has been on the marginally-Canadian production The Tudors. Intelligence is a superbly-crafted crime drama, with loads of action and layer upon layer of compelling intrigue. On the evidence of the first two episodes, it's better than ever - a cranked-up, speedy thriller that grabs you in the first few minutes and takes you on a wild ride.

Intelligence is Canada's newest drama worth watching
Alex Strachan, The Ottawa Citizen
Published: Monday, October 01, 2007

As tonight's season opener proves, Intelligence just might be one of the best dramas on TV at the moment, period. It's crisp, cool and eerily confident. The acting is top shelf all the way. John Cassini as a small-time hood and big-time bar owner; Klea Scott is the coolly ambitious but oddly hard-luck political operative Mary Spalding; Matt Frewer as the malevolent, vindictive and yet oddly inefficient CSIS operative. The performances in Intelligence are nuanced and as real as any of the performances in higher-profile dramas like Dexter, Brotherhood, The Wire and The Riches. The cinematography, the sound, the editing and the music are first class.

Intelligence returns, quietly
by: Ilona Beiks Sep 28, 2007

VANCOUVER -- Intelligence, on TV? Yes, and it's coming back for a second season when Chris Haddock's smart and savvy Vancouver-based crime drama returns Monday night at 9 p.m. on CBC.

It's a new night for the show, which debuted last year Tuesdays at 9 p.m. across from House, where it drew about a tenth of the eyeballs focused on the Global medical drama.

"We got slammed into a tough spot," confirms Haddock, speaking to Playback Daily while shooting on location in a sketchy downtown Vancouver nightclub. "But in Canada you can't worry about that, because with the lack of promotion we're always crippled against U.S. productions. We're getting none. It's a shame.

"It deserves to be seen by Canadians who pay for it," he adds. "We should be in the 10 o'clock drama slot, but with CBC, there are only nine o'clock slots, since the news runs at 10.""

If you haven't seen it I'm working on making my own DVD set (because to the best of my knowledge its not been released to DVD), so I can get others hooked.

The ballet was loads of fun last night. I loved the set for Giselle it was beautifully done. It was a pretty fairy tale and I had fun going out with my mom. The other thing I love about ballet is the male ballet dancers in the nearly giving them a wedge tights. Their lower halves look incredible! I think all guys should have an ass worth grabbing, otherwise whats the point:P

On Sunday I went with my Mom and Jaquline to see Bard on the Beach's production of Taming of the Shrew. While the costumes, acting as we'll as all of the other parts of the production were superb I was shocked. The entire time I was watching the play I was wondering why do we still mount this production on a semi regular basis(I know bard has done it at least twice if not three times in the past eleven years). In the play Petruchio marries a fiery woman and abuses her in to submission. To tame the shrew he takes her to his deserted house where he won't let her eat or sleep for the 7 days preceding her younger sisters wedding. The audience laughs through the whole process of the shrew being tamed. I honestly don't understand why a society where Woman are considered equal that we still support plays like this. I know that Shakespears plays are old and when he wrote them they were acceptable but whenever Merchant of Venice is done there is an uproar about how anti-semetic is, and people question whether Othello is racist. But people don't question or comment on the sexism of Taming the Shrew. My mom even met sevral of her left wing friends at the play. I just wonder what is says about our society.

Why Can't I Own a Canadian?
October 2002
Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a east coast resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted fan,
Jim

"Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?" - Ernest Gaines

We would like to know who really believes in gay rights on LiveJournal. There is no bribe of a miracle or anything like that. If you truly believe in gay rights, then repost this and title the post as "Gay Rights". If you don't believe in gay rights, then just ignore this. Thanks.

I personally believe in equal rights, not specifically gay rights, but the message is still the same end result for this instance.
